Indian Express: Men’s rights group calls for dharnas

Protesting against the upcoming Marriage Laws (Amendment) Bill 2010 with the additional clause for ‘irretrievable breakdown of marriage’, the Men’s Rights Organisation has called for a protest on Saturday, June 16.

According to Atit Rajpara, president, Men’s Rights Organisation, the protest will be held in front of the collector’s office between 10am to 2pm, to put forth 12 demands. Rajpara pointed out that under Section 13-D, only women have been given the right of opposing the petition of divorce on the proposed new ground, while husbands are restrained from doing so if the wife files for divorce.

Their demands include revoking the restrain on husband from opposing the divorce on this ground, considering wife’s share in her ancestral property during property division, taking duration of marriage into account, saying there is a different between a 2-year-old marriage and a 20-year-old one. Another demand was that if a woman remarries, the property share from her earlier husband must be returned to him.

While the Nagpur branch of the Organisation will hold a dharna on Saturday, Mumbai and Bangalore units have already held dharnas last month. Delhi unit is expected to undertake the protest in July, and Lucknow and Kolkata will follow.

The organisation had voiced their opposition earlier, but their recommendations were rejected by a joint parliamentary committee.

“We now demand a fresh joint parliamentary committee to discuss the amendment and consider our argument,” he said.
